Shipping Manager

Summary:  Manages daily activities of the Shipping Department. Responsible for the efficient shipment of products to One Stop’s Customer Base.  Responsibilities may include receiving, picking, packing, shipping, staging, inventory, transporting, and storage.  Responsible for hiring, training, developing and motivating staff; scheduling, delegating work assignments; monitoring individual and group performance to ensure high level of productivity, and order accuracy; accountable for reviewing all Shipping Department processes and procedures in order to continuously improve efficiency.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Direct all activities in the Shipping Department to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient operations including order processing, shipping of orders, and returns processing;
  • Ensure orders are processed and shipped timely and accurately.
  • Research order deviations/shortages to determine the best solution to problems.  Use innovative measures to enhance the efficiency of the physical warehouse and accuracy processes.
  • Utilize sales and payroll projections to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained and produce contingency plans for coverage in times of high volume, heavy employee vacation periods, etc.  Continuously check and adjust staffing in response to known and unanticipated work volumes and attendance factors.  
  • Ensure that all payroll hours are scheduled efficiently to ensure proper processing order flow and that orders are shipped accurately and timely.  Report/update hiring needs in advance to Human Resources.  Build a strong, talented team through active participation in employee selection.
  • Daily reviewing of productivity numbers, ensuring that goals are met, and implementing corrective action where appropriate.
  • Closely monitor overtime and overall daily hours and implement corrective action as needed.
  • Lead the training process and ensure that all new hires are being trained completely and in accordance with the training program.               
  • Ensuring smooth procedures for customer returns and internal defects. 
  • Determine effective merchandise layout and utilization of warehouse space in accordance to product selling for efficient operations.
  • Work closely with the credit department, and customer service to achieve 100% customer satisfaction.
  • Safeguard product and shipping supply inventories, equipment, facility, and staff.
  • Ensure safety is key focus for employees on a daily basis.  Keep Workman’s Comp claims and costs to a minimum. 
  • Oversee the cleanliness of the warehouse and the maintenance of the distribution equipment and facility.  Aware of and participate in administering the preventative maintenance program.  This includes regular upkeep of Hi-Lo's, skid-jacks, the generator and the banding machines.   
  • Ensure the thorough training and development of all Shipping Team personnel, including assistant Shipping managers, Supervisors, and leads. 
  • Monitor the performance of direct reports on a continuous basis and provide performance feedback through informal communications, formal performance reviews and goal setting, and deficiency management.  Coach, counsel, and initiate recommendations on performance management steps, up to and including termination.
  • Significant time is to be spent on Distribution Center (DC) floor supporting employees in all functions and promoting continuous process improvements.
  • Monitors direct operating expense and adherence to budget.  Propose and implement ways to improve and increase efficiencies in the department.  Monitor the inventory and purchase all necessary warehouse supplies and equipment within budgeted amounts.

Minimum qualifications:  The minimum level of education and experience required to perform the job.

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience required. 
  • Prior distribution experience preferred.
  • 10+ years experience in a warehouse or distribution area, with at least 3 years of management experience
  • Experience in a computerized environment, including working with a warehouse database management system
